Employee Is Accused of Having an Affair with a Coworker

Employee Is Accused of Having an Affair with a CoworkerEmployee Is Accused of Having an Affair with a CoworkerA reader asked this question about what to do when coworkers think that she is having an affair with aelendher employee. She says, I am good friends with a male coworker, who is not my boss, but a step higher than I am. We talk at work on the days we work together about both work-related issues and non-work-related things. Naturally, it has gotten back to me that people think we are having an affair. Not surprised. Anyhow, one of the other employees complained to my manager that I talk to him too much and I was told by another member of management that it would be coming up in my performance evaluation. My performance evaluation? Okay, a few things you need to know to answer my question. One, I never let my conversations with anyone interfere with doing my job. Two, I want to ask my manager exactly how much time in hours and minutes is talking to someone too much? Three, does she realize that Im going to have to talk to him to get the job done? Four, and most importantly, I want to know if that is a form of sexual harassment from the accusing coworker. There are some very religious people on my floor and I think they are bothered by us talking because of their own ideas and imagination. Where does it stop? Are they going to pick and choose with whom I am allowed to speak? Why are they being given this power? I have been told that people think Im pretty and that they notice when I walk into a room. HR Response to Employee Is Accused of Having an Affair Human resources responded, Ive had lots of conversations with male colleagues, and I would be absolutely floored if someone thought that I was having an affair with one of them. The fact that youre not surprised leads me to think that you know youre not behaving appropriately in the office. I know you believe that they are jumping to conclusions because they are religious, but consider for a few minute s that youre jumping to conclusions because they are religious, but lets skip that and go through your questions. What will happen if you ask your manager to define, to the minute, how long you can speak to this coworker? This will absolutely antagonize your boss and support the idea that you are not behaving rationally. It is rather a petty way for you to express your annoyance that in no way adds to your aura of professionalism. Of course, she realizes that you need to talk to this man in buchen to do your job. What doesnt need to happen is unprofessional behavior. Its the unprofessional behavior that leads people to think that youre having an affair. Not present in your workplace to make any observations but based on experience this is probably a good description of what goes on between the two of you You talk quietly in the corner. You regularly eat lunch together, without other coworkers joining you for the meal. You talk frequently behind closed doors. You arrange your schedule s o that youre more likely to be with each other than with others. You touch each other, giving arm pats, and the like.Your conversation suddenly goes quiet when someone else walks into the room. You giggle and make other childish, inappropriate conspiratorial sounds. This is the type of behavior that your manager will want you to stop. She doesnt care that youre discussing work. But, work, in almost all cases, should be discussed in the open, and not behind closed doors. The entrance of another employee to the room or conversation should occur naturally and inclusively. If closed doors are necessary for privacy purposes, youll have closed door conversations with other coworkers as well, and no one will see his behavior as abnormal. But, if this is not the case, then holding private closed-door meetings invites speculation. Do behauptung Actions Qualify As Sexual Harassment or Discrimination? You also asked whether your coworkers complaint about this situation is sexual harassment. Nothing youve said here leads any Human Resources practitioner to think youre being harassed or discriminated against because of your gender. This position assumes, though, that your male coworker has been receiving the same negative feedback. If hes not, you should absolutely bring this up with your manager and, if necessary, with Human Resources. Heres your opening statement Several people have accused me of having an affair with Mark. I have been told that this will be mentioned in my performance appraisal, but not his. We arent having an affair, but regardless, if we were, the response should be the same. Otherwise, it smacks of discrimination on the basis of gender. That should snap your boss into action, but if it doesnt, you escalate it. When you escalate your complaint, put it in writing with the following subject line Official complaint of gender discrimination. The reason for this is that it leaves the company with no way to pretend you havent complained about what you bel ieve is illegal behavior. Actions to Take About the Coworkers Speculating About an Affair The next logical question is what should you do about your coworkers and their speculation. Your relationship with your other coworkers has probably not been great. People dont generally accuse their friends of bad behavior at work. Is it possible that youve categorized these people as not my type, the same way you think theyve categorized you? Focus on building positive relationships with the others at the office and you may find that the gossip problem resolves itself. If it doesnt, you need to speak up every time someone says something rude to you. Why would you say that? and then smile and wait. And wait. And wait, until you get a response. People dont expect to have to explain a rude comment, and it can become very uncomfortable when you call them out on it. When they sputter a response you can add, Thats not true. I really wish you wouldnt gossip about me. Now, one last issue. People say that youre pretty and are noticed when you walk into the room. As long as you are dressed appropriately for the business, thats a compliment. If youre not dressed appropriately, thats a nice way of indicating that you should change your wardrobe. Assuming that youre dressed appropriately, the proper response to such a statement is, Thank you. Nothing more. Even if they mean it as an insult, youve just stumped them by being polite. And thats a winning situation for you.

How You Can Simplify Your HR System

How You Can Simplify Yur HR SystemHow You Can Simplify Your HR SystemSimplifying the approach that HR uses to deliver tafelgeschirrs to employees is critical for the success of the Human Resources function to meet employee needs. You know that Human Resources leaders are a significant source of support and comfort to employees in both their personal and professional lives. HR is a service business and simplifying your HR ordnungsprinzip will accelerate delivering services to employees. You want to help employees advance our HR Stheir careers and resolve issues between employees and their managers. Simplify Your HR System to Accelerate tafelgeschirr Delivery Recognize, too, that HR also supports employees through some of the most important and momentous events in their lives, including marriage, childbirth, and battling a serious illness. But too often, routine administrative services, such as answering the same questions over and over again or completing simple administrative tra nsactions, consume the bulk of HRs time when the need to simplify and accelerate the provision of HR services is key. Reduce HRs Administrative Workload The key to reducing that administrative workload is training employees to become more self-sufficient and automating more mundane tasks.Thats where applying a service management approach to the delivery of HR services can help. Service management simplifies the delivery of routine administrative services, freeing HR staff time to focus on high-value activities. The typical HR organization likely has systems for managing employee data and pay-related activities. However, it probably does not have an automated system for handling employee inquiries and fulfilling requests. Consider what happens when an employee receives a summons to jury duty chances are the company still relies on physical paperwork or a string of emails to deal with the employees request for the paid time away from work. Because employee interactions are commonl y tracked using emails and spreadsheets, employee requests are often missed or overlooked. Mistakes then happen, creating further frustration and additional work for HR in their delivery of services to employees. With email, no easy way exists to see if an employee request is stalled or to pinpoint and eliminate process bottlenecks. Similarly, its hard to analyze and respond to employee needs- for instance, identifying frequently requested information and making sure this is available online. Manual administrative processes frustrate employees and are a huge drain on HR teams time. A survey finds that it appears that HR consistently spends about 25% of its time on strategic business partnership activities, about 50% of it on providing and developing HR services and programs, and about 25% of it on recordkeeping and auditing employment practices. Use a Service Management Approach to Simplify Your HR System to Meet Employee Needs The service management approach eliminates those te dious, time-consuming processes. It doesnt just replace email- it transforms how HR engages with employees. Think of service management as the perfect combination of administrative assistant and project manager. It responds instantly to employee requests, progresses cases, automates repeatable manual processes, and even manages complex cross-departmental activities such as employee onboarding and off-boarding. Service management never forgets or makes mistakes, always follows up with people so things get done, and lets you know if theres a problem it cant solve. It also shows you where your employees spend their timeso you can optimize your resource deployment and maximize productivity. How Service Management Integrates With Simplifying Your HR System to Accelerate Service Delivery Service management doesnt replace your current Human Capital Management system- it integrates with it and complements it, giving you visibility and control of the work you probably do mostly via email today. It also provides that same level of visibility to employees. They can see the status of their inquiries, rather than feeling that their requests disappeared into a black hole soon after they submitted them. Providing employees with the ability to supervise the progress of their requests significantly reduces the number of frustrated follow-up emails, phone calls and in-person visits to HR, further cutting HRs administrative workload. Advantages of an HR Service Management Approach Service management starts with the roll-out of a web-based HR portal where employees can find HR information and request HR services. Ideally, employees can access this portal on their work PCs, home computers, laptops, and their smartphones and tablets. This lets them take control of their basic HR needs- such as benefits enrollment or status change updates. Employees simply choose the actual services they need from a service catalog or search for information in the portals knowledge base. Whe n an employee submits a request through the portal, the service management system automatically creates a case and shepherds it through the complete fulfillment process. This includes assigning the case to the right HR expert, automatically routing the case from person to person as each fulfillment step is completed, and maintaining a full case history. You can also extend this service to other departments. For example, service management systems can automatically set up IT accounts or request office space for new hires as part of the onboarding process. The service management system drives the end-to-end HR service delivery processesand knows how behauptung processes are performing. For instance, it can automatically tell you when a case is stalled so you can take action. It also generates a wide range of KPIs and other process metrics- such as how well your team responds to employee inquiries. It can even analyze the types of knowledge-base queries making it easy to identify and f ill in any content gaps. The Bottom Line HR professionals choose to pursue a career in HR because they want to help people, not spend their days filing papers, updating spreadsheets and responding to emails. Too often, mundane requests and piles of paperwork interrupt that work, which frustrates them and the employees theyre trying to help.HR is a service provider and can look to the example of its fellow service provider, the IT department. IT has taken the lead in many enterprise efforts to apply a service management discipline to automating the submission and fulfillment of IT help desk requests.Automating these tasks enables IT to focus on more strategic work that can help the company meet its broader business goals, and better demonstrate ITs value.A service management approach iskey to HR raising its profile to business leaders by simplifying HR systems to deliver higher-quality services and increased employee satisfaction while simultaneously reducing its own workload. HR can devote its time and expertise to more strategic activities that move its business forward.

6 Myth-Busting Facts to Propel Your Job Hunt

6 Myth-Busting Facts to Propel Your Job Hunt6 Myth-Busting Facts to Propel Your Job HuntWhetzu sich you contemplate beginning a job search, or have been engaged in one for a while, it is easy to scuttle your perspektives for success if you mistake many common myths for reality. Especially beware of these1. MYTH Recruiters, career counselors or coaches get people jobs.FACT Recruiters identify and present top-tier talent to their clients. They get paid when their client hires someone theyve brought to their attention. People get hired as a consequence, of course, but a recruiters primary loyalty is always to the client company who pays his or her commissions.Career counselors and coaches help clients get motivated and stay that way. They also provide extremely valuable information about how to go about each stage of the job-search process. They serve as great guides and mentors. They facilitate the job hunt, and often help their clients through the maze. Its possible that they might ha ve connections to leverage within target companies, but when that happens it should be viewed as a bonus rather than an expected service.Dont fall prey to the notion that a recruiter, career counselor or coach will get you a job. While in one way or another they might be great resources, you need to own and take responsibility for your job search from beginning to end. Your job is to get a job, and you should devote the same energy and creativity to it that you would provide to any employer.2. MYTH Posting your rsum on job boards will get you a job.FACT Its generally accepted that less than 10 percent of jobs are filled from employers or recruiters picking people out of job board rsum databases. Worse, it is nearly impossible to tailor your rsum for each position, leaving you with a vanilla rsum that doesnt align your achievements with the priorities of each job for which you want consideration.Job board rsums are time-stamped, so the older ones raise red flags. Even those employer s who are seeking talent through this medium flock to the latest and greatest. It doesnt take long for hiring authorities to begin to think Why hasnt this person got a job already? There must be some problem with him or her. How long it takes to get to this point differs, but its more likely a matter of weeks, not months.3. MYTH Your elevator speech is all about you.FACT A typical elevator speech begins something like, I have eight years as a insert job title here. You wont likely be hired for how long youve been doing whatever it is that youve been doing. What an employer really cares about is the value you bring. Demonstrate that right off the bat by changing the beginning of your elevator speech to something like Ive racked up successes like A, B and C over the course of the last eight years, and I can help to improve your geschftlicher umgang in the areas of X, Y and Z.4. MYTH Networking is about asking for help.FACT Networking is about building and enhancing relationships with people. It is about sharing information, insights, personal and professional development. Effective networking is about paying it forward and giving to get, not begging for anyone and everyone you know to help you get a job. It is key to your job hunt to build your network on an ongoing basis, and to be viewed as a resource rather than a leech. When you go about networking this way, people will be more than willing to lend a hand to you in numerous ways, including introducing you to others who can add value for your job-hunt.5. MYTH Your rsum needs to describe all the things youve been responsible for doing.FACT Your rsum is a marketing document. It should not restate your job description nor serve as your autobiography. It should present your branding statement, key skills and the accomplishments that distinguish you from your competition. When you simply describe all the things you were supposed to do, you lump yourself in with all the other applicants possessing the same general background. Instead, your aim should be to distinguish yourself from them by conveying your unique successes and accomplishments, and to show how you achieved them.6. MYTH It is OK to take some months just for yourself after leaving a job before beginning a job hunt. FACT It is almost always easiest to get a job when you have a job. Multiple studies all confirm that the longer you are out of work the harder it becomes to gain consideration. Job seekers who have been unemployed for more than six months are rarely given the favorable treatment they would have received earlier. These two lessons are simple, and oft repeated time is of the essence in your job search, and you never have a second chance to make a first impression.Success will be yours when you take ownership of your job hunt, take advantages of the professional and networking resources that can guide you on your way, carefully brand yourself and articulate your value.Happy huntingArnie Fertig is the head coach of JOBHUNTER COACH.COM, where he utilizes his extensive background in HR Staffing and as owner of a recruiting company to help mid-career job-hunters land their next job. If an intern comes into the Magic with a great attitude and hard work ethic, they will get noticed. We keep all former interns e-mail addresses in our Alumni distribution list, and we keep them posted via email on all job opportunities that arise. What Advice Would You Give Students Who Are Interested in a Career in Sports Volunteer, volunteer, volunteer Most schools have athletic departments, and even if you are a ticket taker or a customer service rep, having that experience on your resume will put you above someone who doesnt. Spend a summer working for a minor league team or become a team manager for any one of your schools teams. Get as involved as possible in sports as you can, and try to pick an aspect of it that you are interested in. If you are interested in the ausverkauf side, then work with your colleges ticket office. If youre interested in marketing, volunteer to help out at football or basketball games. Even if youre not getting paid, that experience will be priceless. Many professional sports teams also have game night or day positions, which are great for stu dents because of the flexible hours. Are There Any Specific Majors That Would Prepare Students for a Career Many big schools are now offering Sport Management majors or minors, and that is a great way to learn about the industry. When I look at resumes, I look more at the experience than the major. What Does Orlando Magic Look for When Interviewing Interns and Employees We look for someone who is hard working and passionate about sports. When you work in Sports, you do not work the typical 9-5 day. There are days when you work 12-15 hours based on the game schedule, and we look for someone who is passionate enough about sports to love those long days We normally receive about 100 resumes for each internship we offer, and I normally interview approximately 10 of those candidates for each internship. The things that impress me most in those interviews are people who are focused, have done their research on the Magic, and are excited about the opportunity. Candidates who are ap plying for an internship in the exact area they want to work in in the future is great as well, as that shows they have goals and they might be a good full-time candidate down the line. What Personal Attributes and Experiences Does Orlando Magic Seek in Their Job Applicants We look for positive people with great attitudes who will fit into our culture. They need to have strong goals and the work ethic to reach those goals. Since we have internships in several different areas, candidates who have specific experience, whether it be in a club, volunteering, part or full-time positions in the specific area they are applying for, will really stand out. How Can College Students Prepare Themselves for a Career in the Sports Industry Volunteering and getting that experience is the most important thing. Many schools have groups or clubs that students can be involved with as well. If theres a professional or minor league team in their area, I would recommend getting to know people in the organization and making those contacts as early as possible, which could include volunteering with the team or working part time while in school. Also, most Career Services Offices at colleges and universities across the country are a great place to go for information as well. We post all our internships with all the schools in Florida, as well as many schools throughout the country. All Orlando Magic Internships are posted online.

How to Manage Work When You Have a Chronic Illness

How to Manage Work When You Have a Chronic IllnessHow to Manage Work When You Have a Chronic Illness Chronic illness can shake your world. One moment youre perfectly healthy, enjoying life. Then, the next moment, youre seriously ill and struggling to do the simplest tasks. Activities that used to come easily now require careful thought and planning. Life activities you once took for granted, such as breathing, eating, or walking, are now difficult. You once worried about work-life balance , but now your primary concern is making it from one day to the next without experiencing a serious health crisis. Laws like the ADA and FMLA are designed to protect employees from being fired due to disability or medical reasons , but the reality is that it can still be a challenge to maintain employment and still take good care of yourself. Yet many chronically ill workers who are facing serious health issues need to keep working due to the financial burden that comes along with t heir massive medical bills and the need for health insurance. If youre facing this dilemma, were here to help. Heres how elend to get fired when you have a chronic illness. You dont have to tell your supervisor about your illness if you dont want to. However, if your illness is beginning to affect your work, youll need to speak up at some point. If your work quality or production level starts to slide, the last thing you want is for your boss to think youre being lazy or you dont care about your work.In this case, its a good idea to meet with your boss and let him or her know you have a chronic illness. Its up to you how much detail you give.Although your boss might respond with concern and empathy, you should also have a chat with your human resources representative. Its important to make sure someone else in authority is aware of your illness - this way, youll have an easier time defending yourself if a misunderstanding arises, and your job is suddenly on the line .Is your work schedule wearing you down? If the way youre working right now binnenseems to be negatively impacting your health, its time to make a change. Ask your supervisor if he or she could make adjustments that would help keep you healthy and get your work done.Perhaps you could request to work from home a few days a week. If doctors appointments have become difficult to schedule because of strict office hours, ask whether you could change your work schedule, so you can get all your appointments in.Although many employers would do their best to accommodate a chronically ill employee, you could run into resistance. Some bosses will not be eager to assist you, especially if you dont look visibly ill. If youve been denied an accommodation that is necessary to do your job, speak with your human resources manager. Tell him or her about your situation and why you need the accommodation. Some illnesses are considered disabilities, so it might be your legal right to receive the adjustment. If youre unsure, consult with an employment lawyer.Just about every office has at least one bully . When you have a chronic illness and receive accommodations, you could become a target. Some co-workers might get jealous and feel like youre unfairly receiving special treatment. If they are not aware of your health status, their jealousy and resentment could put you at risk for bullying. This type of situation can occur when a chronically ill worker doesnt look visibly ill or disabled. Receiving a modified work arrangement for an invisible disability or illness, such as asthma, could make others in the workplace become resentful or think youre exaggerating your illness.Consequently, others might complain about you to your boss and pick on you for minor work issues. Be on guard for this behavior, and document everything that goes on.You wont perform at your best level if you dont take good care of yourself. Eat a balanced diet, get enough sleep , and follow your doctors orders. Also k eep track of how youre feeling from day to day, and make sure to keep in regular contact with your health team. Dont ignore any nagging symptoms in favor of getting a work assignment done.As soon as you start to feel sick, address the issue, and get the treatment you need. Delaying care could cause complications at work. Waiting to see a doctor could mean more days out of work and a longer recovery time.Dont assume everything is OK because your boss has been quiet. He or she could be waiting to talk until review time. Instead of waiting, your best bet is to have a regular check-in meeting to make sure youre still performing well. Ask your boss whether your work is satisfactory and whether there is anything you need to do to improve. This way, you wont run into surprises that could have been avoided had you checked in earlier.Know you are more than just your illness. Work and personal life can be very hard when the people identify you so closely with your illness. However, its impo rtant to remember you are separate from the disease youre battling. Managing a chronic illness can take a great toll on your sense of self-worth , so its important to remind yourself you have value. And its important to do your best to maintain your self-esteem, so you dont hinder your career advancement due to a lack of confidence .Resist the urge to shrink into the shadows and fall below the radar. Your financial future could depend on it. People with low self-esteem often try to remain under the radar screen because they dont want to be noticed, but especially in this economy, that is the wrong thing to do, Lois P. Frankel, author and founder of Corporate Coaching International, told Forbes.Managing - or more accurately, battling - a chronic illness is physically and mentally taxing. It will be very important that you have someone to talk to regularly. A mental health professional can help you work through all of the ups and downs that come along with balancing sickness and a demanding work load . Also, keep close friends and family in the loop.Youll need as much support as you can get. Having a trusted support circle will reduce the chances of you having a meltdown at work when things get tough. Its OK to be sad or angry about what is happening to you, but dealing with those emotions in healthy ways is key. There are tools available to help you thrive in your work and personal life while managing a chronic illness. You can still have a successful career even though you arent as healthy as you once were. Email Mishaps Hiring Managers Make - Spark Hire

Email Mishaps Hiring Managers Make - Spark HireHalloween is almost upon us, but thats no reason to partake in scary hiring behavior. There are so many mistakes that job seekers and candidates can make in the hiring process that cause you to think, This is definitely leid the candidate for me Thats simple enough. Especially since it is your job to find mistakes in your candidates. Have you ever thought about the mistakes you are making in the hiring process though? More specifically, the email mistakes you might be making? Before you meet a candidate in person, what you say and do in your email correspondence is a reflection of the company you are hiring for.In light of All Hallows Eve tomorrow, we will be covering the scariest video interviewing mistakes you can make. In order to get warmed up for those mistakes so that you can easily avoid them, and to avoid top candidates running away from you and your company as if you were The Blob, why not cover some of the email mishaps that hi ring managers often make? You may be thinking, email mishaps? How much can you possible screw up in an email? Well, if that was a thought that crossed your mind then that is one of your first mistakes. Often times when we send emails we are doing so in a hurry. Its easier to send along an email than to spielblttchen up the phone and talk to a candidate. Email certainly has its pros and cons, but with it comes the potential of making a lot of silly- and easily avoidable- mistakes. Take note of these email mishaps and avoid them like the plague next time you take to your keyboard to write to a candidate.Spelling Errors This should be complete common sense, but there are still thousands of people that refuse to edit their emails before they push that send button. Before a candidate comes in for an interview, its highly likely you will be interacting with them through email and over the internet in some capacity like with video interviews. That is completely fine, but you have to remembe r that what you say- and how you say it- is a reflection of the company. Since you are likely the only person from your company interacting with the candidate, its easy for them to associate your behavior and responses with how the company operates. If you send along an emails ripe with vocabulary and grammatical errors, then it doesnt say much about you or the company you work for. Does this person not care how they are representing the company? Are all employees that work there this careless? Not all candidates will come to this conclusion, but its possible that if you have a ton of repeated errors in your email correspondence that you may lose out on some candidates that would otherwise be interested. Be koranvers to edit and check your emails before you send them off.Job DescriptionsThough its not part of email correspondence, making sure your job description is void of any vocab or grammatical errors is extremely important. A company that lists a job description with a handful o f errors- even just one or two- looks less credible and very unprofessional. Be sure to edit your job description and even have other people view it as well.Deathly-Long WaitsEveryone knows that the hiring process takes a long time to complete. However, leaving candidates guessing for weeks is enough to send them running for the hills. If you say in your emails that you will get back to them after a set time period, then stand by your word. Stay on top of your email correspondence and dont let your candidates sit for weeks on end before getting back to them. As stated in our post on how long a candidate will wait for a job offer, if you leave them hanging for too long they will most certainly move on- or worse, theyll get picked up by another employer or company. If your decision making or hiring process is going longer than previously thought, then be sure to stay in contact with candidates to let them know what is going on. Tell them the interviewing and hiring process is going ove r the estimated time period and that you will get back to them as soon as a decision has been made. Leaving them in the dark is an easy way for candidates to associate ghoulish, unappealing characteristics with your company.Email Job OffersThere is nothing more impersonal or confusing than receiving a job offer over email. Granted, most candidates wont turn a job offer down simply because it was offered over email, but its very impersonal and a bit unprofessional as well. If you are truly excited about hiring this candidate and bringing them onto your team, then take the time to give them a call directly to offer them the job. They will be able to hear your excitement and enthusiasm and will know that you are anxious to have them start.Email is a great tool to use both in our personal and professional lives, that much is certainly true. However, as with any tool there are proper ways to use it and improper ays. Be sure you are properly using your email to correspond with candidates and coworkers as well, and always remember to edit your emails before you push send.Have you ever made or experienced a terrible email mishap?
